FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add my repos to the map?

Click the avatar icon in the top-right corner and sign in with GitHub. Your public repositories with at least 1 star are automatically claimed and added as buildings in their language's kingdom. No manual setup needed.

Why don't all my repos appear?

Only public repositories with at least 1 GitHub star become buildings. This keeps the map focused on projects that have community engagement. Private repos and forks without stars are not included.

How is building size determined?

The number of GitHub stars determines the building rank and footprint size. A repo with 1–20 stars is a small hovel (2×2), while a repo with 100,000+ stars becomes a massive citadel (20×20). See the full ranking on the How It Works page.

What is a "kingdom"?

Each programming language on GitHub is represented as its own kingdom (city) in the world. TypeScript repos live in the TypeScript kingdom, Python repos in the Python kingdom, and so on. Navigate the world map to explore each kingdom.

Who is the "king" of a building?

The contributor with the most commits to a repository is crowned the king of that building. Their avatar appears on the building's banner. If you contribute more than anyone else, you become the king!

What are citizens?

Citizens are the top contributors to repositories. They appear as pixel-art characters walking the streets of their kingdom. The more you contribute across repos in a language, the more you'll appear in that kingdom.

Does everyone see the same world?

Yes! The world is the same for everyone. All users see the same buildings in the same positions. When you sign in and claim your repos, those buildings are added to the shared world for everyone to see.

Is Git Kingdom free?

Yes, Git Kingdom is completely free and open source. There are no premium features, ads, or paid tiers.

What data do you collect?

Only your public GitHub profile (username, avatar) and public repo metadata (names, stars, language). We never access private repos or store your email. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Can I remove my repos from the map?

Sign out to disassociate your account. For complete data removal, open an issue on our GitHub repo and we'll remove your data within 30 days.

How often is the map updated?

The world data refreshes periodically. Newly claimed repos appear immediately. Star counts and contributor data sync from GitHub within a few hours.
